Arrival (belated)

Today we finally got internet access set up in our room. The following post I orginally attempted to post Tuesday evening, but a free, temporary wi-fi connection I got on in Lilongwe flaked out on me.

More recent updates coming soon...

At long last we arrived in Lilongwe, Malawi. No major travel issues other than...

...our flight out of Washington was delayed about 2 hours. We were seriously wondering whether we would make our connecting fight in Addis Ababa. We had one touchdown in Rome, then we landed in Addis almost an hour after our connecting flight was scheduled to depart. We were mostly mentally geared up for spending a night in Addis, however the friendly folks at Ethiopian Airlines met us as we got off our plane, asked us what our connecting fight was, and then hurried us onto the plane that was waiting for us on the tarmac.

From Addis to Lilongwe, we had just one more touchdown in the Congo. As we came in to land in the Congo, the view out the airplane window was pretty much exactly what you would imagine. Judging by the slam-on-the-brakes sensation that accompanied this landing, I'd say their runway is not quite as long as what you normally land on. Tracy was taken aback when she saw someone urinating next to the runway. But an hour later, we took off for Lilongwe - our shortest leg of the journey. We landed safe and sound.

So we made it. I bet you can guess what didn't make it. That's right, our checked bags are scheduled to be joining us on Thursday.

The hospital where Tracy and Marideth are working is actually in Namitete, about an hour drive from Lilongwe. We weren't sure if we left for Namitete tonight if the hospital staff would be around to get us situated in their guest house by the time we got there. So for tonight, we got a room in Lilongwe which seems to be entirely adequate. Hey, it comes with a mosquito net!
