Insect Adventure

The following posted by Tracy...

This is the first time that I've posted on the blog, as Marideth and I have been working at the hospital, but we had a fun little experience tonight that I wanted to share. We are living in a guesthouse near the hospital with several housemates, who are great. There's the 3 of us plus Penny (a 2nd year internal medicine resident from Toronto), Marie (a 1st year pediatric resident from California), and Erin (a 1st year ID fellow from Portland). They're all really friendly and fun, and we spend lots of time together exploring the surrounding village and cooking (we are in a small village with no restaurants, so we cook all of our meals together in the guesthouse). In any case, Penny went into the kitchen tonight and started shrieking because she saw a giant cockroach, 2 geckos (small lizards), and hundreds of ants on the kitchen floor. Marideth and I went to explore, and Marideth discovered that what we thought were ants were actually COCKROACH BABIES!! It was one of the grossest things I've seen. Needless to say, Marideth and Penny went after the cockroaches with bug spray and were successful in killing off quite a few. Just one of the many bizarre things we encounter each day... Marideth and I only work a half day tomorrow, so we are hoping to blog about some of our hospital experiences. Hope everyone is having a super day!

  1. Was that cockroach really giant ? Florida's cockroaches are pretty big too. I'd say 1-1.5 inches. They got me scared too at first, since they were many times larger than anything I saw before that. Looks like the largest ones live in Australia - 3.5 inches long.
